When you arrive in a new city, one of the hardest things to do is getting around. You may want to go to the bank, to grocery stores, to diners and restaurants, or to meet friends. In Moncton, a bus service will take you to most of the places you want to go to. However, the routes that they follow are circuitous and time-consuming. And as we all know, time is money! So another excellent way to get around in Moncton is cycling. It saves you money, causes less pollution, and gets you some exercise while you’re at it.
Why cycling
Moncton is generally flat, with a low gradient that makes cycling an easy task. Most of the roads have a cycling track delineated and marked off clearly towards the extreme right. There are also some cycling tracks running parallel with the streets. A lot of neighbourhoods have cycling trails running through them, so no matter where you live, you can reach the nearest grocery store on a bicycle.
Parking a bicycle is easy too. Most stores, restaurants, and business places have a bicycle stand. All you need to do is buy a bicycle lock. Moncton is quite safe, but it is always advisable to lock your bike if you’re going to be away for a few hours, or if the bike is parked outside overnight.
Where to get it
I brought my own mountain bike from back home in India, but you can buy one off Facebook Marketplace or Kijiji, or even buy a new one. There are tons of options available in the stores that sell bicycles here in Moncton – Canadian Tire, Walmart, Costco and Jim’s bicycle shops. The road surfaces in Moncton are generally well-maintained, so you could go for a pavement/road surface tyres option. For winter, you’ll have to go for fat bikes with wide tyres for better grip. If you are more adventurous, you could go trail and mountain biking – there are lots of these tracks running through beautiful foliage. Then there are some options for electric bicycles too, but they are more expensive.
Go social
There are also a few cycling clubs with their details mentioned on Facebook and Instagram. Check out Jim’s Bike shop, Velo and Bent Spokes. You can also check out the Alltrails app if you want detailed information on trails for cycling and running. On Facebook, you can find the Mountain Bike Group, Mike’s Bike Shop and Moncton Fat Bike club.
We wish you happy cycling!
